great entry packed with enough to feed on for weeks
I dont have the time, but I hope to read it over more carefully

"The competition between expatriates: who is cooler, who speaks better Japanese, who knows more."

Its the same in Prague, who speaks Czech better, who knows more, etc ... sometimes I think of the expat community as a lonely bunch of lost souls clinging together in fear .. Now in Prague, mostly like Japan too I would imagine, we get mostly young twenty-somethings over for a year or two teaching English .. they clog the streets. But what am I? Just one who stayed forever ...

Japan has a much richer culture I think compared to CZ, more mannerly and diverse. We at least take off our shoes here too on entering a home ...

The Empire Never Ended

Yes, something of a blurt of writing in recent days! Apologies, perhaps for length.

The Czech Republic (I keep on wanting to add -oslovakia...) has the possible advantage (or not) that you can more readily vanish into the background. It doesn't matter how much Uniqlo or whatever I might wear, still evidently not from these parts... I could more or less vanish when I lived in Poland, unless until very up close and even then I somehow managed to speak Polish (badly!) with a heavy Russian accent which threw perceptions a bit.

I've been to a few expat options here in Osaka. Some are just more international and hence attract a wider group, others are quite definitely made for foreigners. This generally means they feel very American in a frat-boy (not that I quite understand that term) abroad sort of way. If there was a watering hole for Czech expats, I'd be down there in a flash!
